Where to stay

Óbidos or Peniche: choose a base for your surf trip

Choose a base by the journeys you will actually make, including the journeys made by people who are not surfing.

Write down the shape of your trip

How many days do you want to surf, and how much time do you want in towns or around the lagoon? List the places you expect to visit before comparing accommodation. A property described as near the coast may still be inconvenient for the beach chosen by your instructor.

Ask the school about meeting points

Before booking accommodation, ask your surf provider where lessons normally meet and how location changes are communicated. Confirm whether transfers are offered or whether you need your own transport. Do not assume that a lesson advertised for an area starts at your accommodation.

Compare the whole stay

Think about wet equipment, drying space, food options and the needs of non-surfers. A slightly longer drive can be reasonable if it supports the rest of the group. Conversely, a shorter journey to lessons can make repeated sessions much easier.

Keep an adaptable day

Use a town or lagoon visit as a separate part of the trip rather than a rushed extra after every session. Weather and fatigue may change the plan. Choose a base that still feels worthwhile when you spend a day out of the water.
